Actually Clothing the Naked

For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home.  I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.
Matthew 25:35-36

I saw these two children walking down the dirt road when we were doing community outreach in Nicaragua.  We went out in teams of two, house to house, each team with a bag of children’s clothing and hygiene kits (gallon ziploc bags filled with toiletries).

Neither child had shoes.  The boy was just wearing his blue pants.  This isn’t the kind of neighborhood where you walk around without shoes, if you have them.

I stopped them after they went a little ways down a side street, and in jumbled Spanish I tried to say, “I’m working with the church, Mundo de Fe, in Managua.  We come in the name of Jesus.  I want to give you these things.”  I grabbed a pair of blue flip-flops from my friend’s duffel bag, and found that blue polo shirt in mine.  Perfect fit.

I found a pretty shirt for the girl, and gave them a hygiene kit with instructions to take it home to their mom.  They smiled for my picture, then turned around and headed back the way they came, with big smiles.

Later I came across a little one, 3 or 4 years old, naked as a jaybird with a dinosaur toy in his hand.  God provided a pair of jeans and a Superman sleeveless t-shirt for him.

We don’t often see people without clothes around here.  It’s rare that we have a chance to literally clothe the naked.  But it’s an incredible experience to provide clothing for someone without.  Our whole team did that all over the neighborhood that day.  That’s one reason we as the church need to keep a global mindset – the need is great.

‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’ – Matthew 25:40

Question: Have any of you ever had a similar experience?  What are some ways we could possibly “clothe the naked” among us?
